The Nordlys system allows your physician to choose the right type of treatment, using either the Ellipse IPL technology or Nd:YAG laser, for your particular condition and skin type.
The system operates by delivering pulses of energy that directly target vessels deep within the skin. Because of this, only the vessels that require treatment are impacted, while the surrounding vessels are not affected.
Vascular Lesions
Sun Damage
Acne
Perhaps you or someone you know has been diagnosed with vascular lesions. Generally, vascular lesions are collections of dense, small blood vessels that are located in and below the skin.
They can appear anywhere on the body, and can be caused by sun damage, genetic factors, rosacea, or aging. And they can occur in a variety of forms, including:
- Port wine stains
- Leg veins
- Broken capillaries
- Diffuse redness
- Hemangiomas
- Cherry angiomas
What You Can Expect – Treating Vascular Lesions with Nordlys
- Prior to your Nordlys procedure, you and your healthcare provider will meet to discuss your treatment goals. Normally, you should avoid sun exposure in the 4 weeks leading up to treatment. After treatment, you
should avoid sun exposure for 30 days. - Your physician will select the type of treatment best for your condition and skin type. The Ellipse IPL uses exclusive selective wavelength technology to deliver narrowband light, which means less heat on the skin.
- The number of treatments depends on the location and number of the vessels to be treated. The treatment time depends on the area to be covered and the number of distinct vessels.
- Smaller vessels can disappear immediately after treatment; larger ones fade away more gradually over the next few weeks. Patients experience low downtime, a little swelling, and redness, which disappears in 1-4 days.

As we grow older, our skin changes. It becomes thinner and loses its smoothness, and unwanted pigmentation and small vessels can appear. Over time, sun exposure on your face, hands, arms, and chest can accelerate the signs of aging.
Sun damage can result in a variety of vascular and pigmented lesions, including:
- Dark spots
- Freckles
- Age spots
- Uneven pigmentation
- Diffuse Redness
Fortunately, you can rejuvenate your skin and keep a younger and fresher look with the Ellipse IPL treatment.
The Ellipse IPL™ treatment rejuvenates your sun-damaged skin and makes it look clear and bright by delivering short bursts of light that directly target the blood vessels or melanin within your skin. Potentially harmful wavelengths are removed using patented Dual Mode Filtering. The remaining wavelengths are absorbed by the hemoglobin in your blood vessels—only the treated ones—and the melanin in your freckles, sun spots, or other pigmented lesions.
What You Can Expect – Treating Sun Damage with Nordlys
- Prior to your Ellipse IPL™ procedure, you and your healthcare provider will meet to discuss your treatment goals. It is important to avoid tanning (sun, tanning salons, and self-tanning products) before and during the treatment period.
- A treatment could take about 20 minutes, depending on the area of the face or body that you want treated. You should see an improvement after the first treatment, but up to 3 treatments may be required to achieve the full effect.
- The number of treatments depends on the location and number of vessels to be treated. Treatments are most efficient in patients with light skin who are not suntanned at the time of the treatment. Preprogrammed settings for different skin types ensure a correct energy output for your skin type.
- After treatment your skin may benefit from applying a cold damp cloth to your face or from using an ointment prescribed by your healthcare provider. Also, you should avoid sun exposure for 30 days, even if there is no sign of inflammation in the treated area.
- You may notice a sloughing off of some skin or darkening of some pigmented spots for a few days following treatment. After that you will find that your skin looks smoother and fresher. You might choose to have 1 or 2 annual maintenance treatments.
- Talk to your healthcare provider about what you can expect with your individual treatment.
Are you suffering from acne? Well, you are not alone. Acne affects 50 million Americans a year—making it the most common skin condition in the United States.
Acne occurs when your sebaceous glands overproduce an oily substance called sebum. When extra sebum gets trapped in your hair follicles, your skin can become irritated—leading to the appearance of pimples on your face. Left untreated, some types of acne can cause permanent scarring.
The Nordlys system treats acne by reducing the blood supply to the sebaceous gland to slow down the production of sebum. The system delivers short, safe bursts of Ellipse IPL directed at the skin. Using patented Dual Mode Filtering technology, the system filters the light to ensure that only the wavelengths necessary for the treatment are used. Because of this, only the blood vessels that supply the sebaceous gland are impacted, while the surrounding vessels are not affected.
What You Can Expect – Treating Acne With Nordlys
- Prior to your Nordlys procedure, you and your healthcare provider will meet to discuss your treatment goals. Including consultation and preparation, you should count on about half an hour for this visit.
- The number of treatments you will have will depend on the severity of the condition and the area to be treated. A typical course of therapy includes 4 treatments, with 3 weeks between each visit.
- The best results are achieved on inflammatory acne—red, aching, raised pimples. It is important that your skin not have a recent suntan. Consult with your healthcare provider to see if you are a candidate for treatment.
- You may notice some general redness on your face following the treatment. If you have sun-damaged skin with dark spots, some of these pigmented spots may turn darker for a few days following treatment, before eventually disappearing.
- Because acne is difficult to eradicate completely, your healthcare provider may recommend that you continue using topical treatments for some months after the Ellipse IPL sessions have ended.
- If you have a future acne outbreak, the treatment can be repeated. Talk to your healthcare provider about what results you can expect with your treatment.
